Dartmouth Alumni for Common Sense would like to thank the thousands of alumni who cast YES votes and to all those who supported this effort, including The Dartmouth and so many prominent alumni leaders.
We ran a hard fought campaign and couldn’t be happier with the historic turnout in this year’s vote. We are pleased to have played a role in driving such strong alumni participation.
We’re not surprised with the way this vote came out. We knew from day one this would be an uphill battle. We started this campaign way behind, but we were able to fight back and force a virtual tie -- despite a very complex set of issues and concerted opposition.
Given that the intricacies of alumni governance are far removed from the day-to-day lives of most Dartmouth alumni, we always saw this campaign as the first step in a long educational process. We take great pride in the fact that more alumni than ever are now more aware of the College's governance issues.
The results of the balloting reflect a sincere difference of opinion within the Dartmouth community, one that should be addressed through a period of reflection and open discussion. While the proposed constitution didn’t pass, none of the opposition’s amendments passed either. That result that is difficult to interpret, and leaves plenty of food for thought for the College and the leaders of the current alumni governance structure.
We did our best, and we are sincerely thankful for all the support the proposed constitution received. Thank you for making your voice heard, and for voting to keep Dartmouth strong!
